Navigating Platform Ecosystem Challenges: A Study on Iranian Digital Businesses
摘要
Platform businesses represent critical knowledge-intensive ecosystems in the digital economy, serving as conduits for information creation, diffusion, and application across diverse participant networks. These ecosystems transcend traditional transaction facilitation by orchestrating complex knowledge flows between producers, consumers, and complementors, thereby generating value through both network effects and knowledge-based capabilities. This study investigates internal challenges faced by Iranian platform businesses from a knowledge economy perspective, examining how management inefficiencies and resource constraints shape their operations within unique socio-economic and regulatory contexts. While platforms globally leverage knowledge stocks and flows as strategic resources for scalability, Iranian platforms encounter distinct knowledge-related hurdles, including weak knowledge governance frameworks, inefficient knowledge coordination processes, and inadequate knowledge quality assurance mechanisms. Grounded in the Resource-Based View (RBV) with explicit focus on knowledge resources as critical organizational assets, this research employs a novel hybrid analytical framework integrating Fuzzy Delphi Method with Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA) to systematically identify, prioritize, and analyze 20 critical challenges from an initial list of 60. Findings highlight systemic inefficiencies in knowledge sharing, participant alignment, and internal knowledge coordination as critical barriers, underscoring the need for enhanced knowledge governance, knowledge-based trust-building mechanisms, and organizational learning capabilities. The study contextualizes these challenges as manifestations of knowledge resource mismanagement and insufficient knowledge integration capacity. This research provides actionable insights for practitioners, including recommendations for knowledge governance improvement, strategic knowledge resource allocation, and knowledge-driven scalability enhancement. The findings contribute to the literature on knowledge-based platform dynamics in emerging markets and offer a robust framework for addressing knowledge-related operational bottlenecks. The research has significant implications for policymakers and practitioners aiming to bolster knowledge-intensive platform ecosystems in similar socio-economic contexts.
