Using Artificial Neural Networks to Validate Resident Perception in Assessing Potential Prospects of Tourism Development in Pakistan from CPEC Road and Transportation Initiative

This study examines the perceptions of residents regarding tourism development resulting from the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project. The region around CPEC has significant potential for tourism development due to its natural resources, and expanding the network of roads is crucial to enhance tourism sustainability and provide easy access to tourist destinations. Using a questionnaire-based survey and artificial neural network algorithms, we investigated the impact of community attachment, environmental impacts, sustainability impacts, social impacts, and economic impacts on residents’ perceptions. Our findings reveal a positive attitude towards tourism development due to the CPEC project, with significant predictors including community attachment, environmental impacts, sustainability impacts, social impacts, and economic impacts. This research contributes to the literature on tourism development and regional economics, providing insights for stakeholders to inform decision-making and promote sustainable tourism development in the CPEC region.
