Crop wild relatives of major cereals and millets: an overview

Crop production faces significant challenges due to rising global food demands and climate variability, which calls for the creation of resilient, high-yielding, and nutritionally enhanced varieties. Crop wild relatives (CWRs) have a wealth of genetic diversity and important characteristics that have been mostly lost due to domestication and contemporary breeding, such as resistance to abiotic stresses, diseases, and pests. Recent advances in next-generation sequencing, genomics, and omics technologies have accelerated the discovery and utilization of novel genes and alleles from CWRs, enabling the identification of genomic regions lost through domestication and facilitating their targeted integration into cultivated cereals and millets. The genetic potential of CWRs to improve important traits in major cereals and millets is summarized in this review along with the challenges of incorporating them into breeding programs and the use of cutting-edge biotechnological tools like genome editing, QTL mapping, and genome-wide association studies. This review also elaborates on the significance of global conservation initiatives and gene bank resources in preserving the rich diversity of CWRs for future crop improvement. By safeguarding these genetic treasures, conservation efforts ensure that breeders have access to a vast, untapped reservoir of traits that can be harnessed to address the challenges of modern agriculture.
