<p>The ratoon system is an emerging rice cultivation method with economic and time-saving advantages. However, its performance is known to be affected by various factors. Inpari 42 and Logawa, a high-yielding variety commonly used in Indonesia, were tested for their suitability for the ratoon system. Rice samples were collected from five Indonesian farming fields over the period of 2022 and 2023, with cultivation carried out using both conventional and ratoon systems. Evaluation of the physical, milling, physicochemical, and sensory qualities of the obtained rice grains was carried out. The results showed that grain characteristics were significantly affected by the cropping system. There were significant differences in head rice recovery and the proportion of broken grains, as well as the proportion of chalky grains. Ratoon rice's gel consistency was lower, but its amylose content and gelatinization temperature were higher than those from the conventional system. Consumer acceptability was more affected by cultivar components than by the cropping season. No significant changes in mineral content were observed. These findings showed that the rice variety is a determinant factor for the ratoon system. Inpari 42 demonstrated better suitability for the ratoon system than Logawa, indicated by higher consistency in grain quality.</p>
