<p>Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are autoimmune diseases characterized by aberrant, misdirected immune responses targeting the body’s own tissues. While genetic predisposition contributes to disease pathogenesis, the substantial increase in autoimmune disease incidence over the past century suggests a&#xa0;significant role for environmental factors, including microbial triggers. The microbiome, comprising all microorganisms colonizing the human body, may act as a&#xa0;microbial trigger through dysbiosis. Specific members of the microbiome are thought to initiate autoimmune responses via mechanisms such as molecular mimicry, epitope spreading, and microbial translocation. This review highlights key examples of the microbiome’s potential involvement in the pathogenesis of RA and SLE.</p>
