Knochen‑, Gelenk- und periprothetische Infektionen – eine interdisziplinäre Herausforderung

Bone and joint infections encompass a wide range of entities. In particular the incidences of periprosthetic infections, diabetic foot infections, and spondylodiscitis continue to increase. Their management is complex, and it is crucial to involve an interdisciplinary team of surgeons, infectious disease specialists, and microbiologists. The evidence regarding treatment modalities is rather low, but some landmark studies have been published in recent years. For native vertebral osteomyelitis, non-inferiority of 6‑week versus 12-week antibiotic therapy was demonstrated, while non-inferiority for the 6‑week therapy was not shown in periprosthetic infections. Early oralization (within 7 days) for various bone infections was not inferior and a minimum duration of intravenous therapy is no longer recommended.
