Reconstruction of the Holocene landscape of Hugli-Bidyadhari interdistributary plain with focus on the Kochpukur archaeological site in lower deltaic Bengal, India

The proper appreciation of geomorphic evolution and landscape dynamics provides reliable interpretation of human settlements in any palaeo-fluvial terrain. The present study aims to reconstruct the evolution and degeneration of major river system within the Hugli-Bidyadhari interdistributary plain particularly, to uncover the historical significance of Kochpukur archaeological site in the mature deltaic region of West Bengal. Several methodological frameworks were built in this case to reach the goal. As such, historical maps from 1767–2024 were employed in this study after proper geo-rectification. With this, the analysis of palaeo-shorelines along with the subsurface sediment depositionary character was also undertaken to understand the geomorphological dynamics of this area. In addition, written archival evidences were also incorporated in this study to link all the dynamism of the region. The study explored Kochpukur’s historical significance, tracing the region’s evolution from an early Holocene estuarine zone to a more stable floodplain environment in the mid-Holocene, due to the receding sea levels. This transition enabled the Hugli River and its distributary channels to gradually shape the fluvio-deltaic landscape, fostering conditions suitable for human habitation in the later Holocene period. Subsequent reduction in freshwater inflow transformed the fluvial landscape into a tidal ecosystem. Furthermore, cartographical evidences from the past 248 years, showed the gradual decay of tidal channels, adjacent to the study area. This transformation, driven by both natural processes and human interventions, resulted in the degradation of the natural tidal environment and the burial of the original landscape. Overall, these examination underscores the multidimensional factors shaping the dynamic landscape and thereby offering critical insights into the historical significance of Kochpukur.
