A Systematic Review of the Experiences of People with Intellectual Disabilities Attending Mindfulness-Based Therapeutic Interventions
摘要
There has been an increase in the number of adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) being offered psychological therapy over the past two decades. Mindfulness-based interventions may be an effective intervention in reducing distress for this group. Adults with ID can provide valuable insights into their experiences of interventions. The current systematic review explored the subjective experiences of adults with ID attending mindfulness-based interventions.
MethodA systematic review of four databases identified 11 studies that met the inclusion criteria.
ResultsThematic synthesis revealed four thematic categories: (1) enjoyment, change, and unintended consequences; (2) cognitive, physical, and interpersonal demands; (3) change facilitated through interpersonal connection; (4) and intervention and facilitation adaptations.
ConclusionsFindings tentatively suggest that with appropriate adaptations, adults with ID can benefit from mindfulness-based interventions including connection with others. Further study is required as to what specific elements of mindfulness are particularly helpful for adults with an ID.
