The Role of Sense of Coherence Between Mindful Parenting and Internalizing and Externalizing Behaviors Among Adolescents: A Cross-Sectional Study and Weekly Diary Study
摘要
Parents play a critical role in adolescents' emotional health by helping them cope with stressors and protecting them from potential risk factors. Although the relationship between mindful parenting and internalizing behaviors (IB) and externalizing behaviors (EB) has been addressed, the weekly weekly process of this relationship and the role of sense of coherence (defined as the ability to comprehend and manage stressors and to derive meaning from stress management) underlying this relationship mechanism have remained unclear.
MethodStudy I (n = 484) with a cross-sectional design and testing at a single time point and at the between-person level only, and Study II (n = 108) with a weekly diary design and testing at both the within-person and between-person levels, both aimed to examine whether the sense of coherence has a mediating role between mindful parenting and IB and EB. Data were collected from adolescents only.
ResultsAs a result of the simple mediation analysis of Study I and the multilevel mediation analysis of Study II, the direct effect of mindful parenting on sense of coherence, IB and EB and the mediating role of sense of coherence were found at both the between-person and within-person levels.
ConclusionsThe current study revealed that mindful parenting increased sense of coherence, which in turn reduced adolescents' IB and EB. Thus, this study suggests mindful parenting strategies can enhance adolescents' sense of coherence and reduce IB and EB.
