Effects of an Online Meditation Program on Sleep Quality, Depression, Anxiety, and Perceived Stress in Liver Transplant Recipients: A Randomized Controlled Trial

The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of an online meditation intervention (Neuromeditation) in improving sleep quality, reducing depression, and alleviating anxiety and perceived stress symptoms in liver transplant recipients.
MethodA randomized controlled trial (RCT) with two parallel groups was conducted from November 2023 to May 2024 at a medical school in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Sixty-one liver transplant recipients were randomized to either a 6-week Neuromeditation program delivered via videoconferencing (n = 34) or a waitlist control group (n = 27). The primary outcome was the between-group difference in Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) scores from baseline to post-intervention. Secondary outcomes included changes in Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI), Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI), and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) scores.
ResultsIntent-to-treat analysis showed significant improvements in the meditation group compared with controls for PSQI (–3.92 points, p < 0.001), BDI (–5.51 points, p = 0.001), and BAI (–5.45 points, p = 0.013). No significant between-group difference was observed for PSS-10 scores (–3.24 points, p = 0.159). Effect sizes were large for the PSQI and BDI, and moderate for the BAI.
ConclusionsThe online meditation program significantly improved sleep quality, anxiety, and depressive symptoms in liver transplant recipients. We believe that integrating meditation into post-transplant care could substantially improve sleep quality and reduce depressive and anxiety symptoms in liver transplant recipients.
