Comparative Assessment of the Renal Effects of ZnO Nanoparticles Versus Zinc Chloride in Diabetic Mice: Biochemical and Histopathological Insights

Nanotechnology has emerged as a promising field for developing innovative therapeutic strategies, including diabetes management. This study investigated the antidiabetic effects of zinc chloride (Zn) and the potential of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) in modulating blood glucose, biochemical parameters, kidney histopathology, and immunohistology in an alloxan-induced diabetic mouse model. Thirty male albino mice were divided into six groups: Negative Control (C), Diabetic Control (D), Diabetic + Zn (D + Z, 4 mg/kg. body weight), Negative Control + Zn (C + Z, 4 mg/kg b. w), Diabetic + ZnO-NPs (D + N, 4 mg/kg b. w), and Control + ZnO-NPs (C + N, 4 mg/kg b.w). Treatments were administered for 28 days, followed by blood and kidney tissue collection for histopathology and immunohistochemistry analysis. Our results show that Zinc chloride exhibited notable antidiabetic effects. On the other hand, while ZnO-NPs showed some negative changes, the results were not entirely conclusive, indicating that further research is needed to better understand their potential effects.
