Mapping the Landscape of Embodied-Cognitive Linguistics Research in China: A Visualized Bibliometric Analysis

In recent years, Embodied-Cognitive Linguistics (ECL), as an emerging field, has achieved significant theoretical advancement beyond Cognitive Linguistics, garnering increasing scholarly attention and practical applications. However, no systematic review has yet been conducted to synthesize its research developments. In order to investigate the current landscape, research frontiers, and future trajectories of ECL studies in China, this study employs bibliometric data from the China National Knowledge Network (CNKI) citation database. Through CiteSpace-based knowledge mapping analysis, we construct a research paradigm model and conduct visual analytics of domestic ECL scholarship. The findings reveal the following: (1) Embodied-Cognitive Linguistics research in China currently demonstrates vigorous development momentum, with sustained growth in annual publication output. While multiple collaborative author teams have emerged, inter-team cooperation remains limited. Professor Wang Yin from Sichuan International Studies University stands as the most prolific scholar in this domain. (2) The disciplinary influence of domestic ECL research remains constrained, with most publications confined to foreign language and literature studies involving limited linguistic varieties. Establishing a multidimensional, multidisciplinary, and multilingual research paradigm is imperative to gain recognition from both international Cognitive Linguistics communities and domestic Chinese linguistics circles. (3) Current research hotspots concentrate on three dimensions: philosophical origin-tracing, theoretical framework construction, and practical applications. (4) Future developmental trajectories will emphasize utilizing Embodied-Cognitive principles to profoundly reinterpret the contemporary value of Chinese classics while establishing translation theories with Chinese characteristics, thereby constituting an emerging research paradigm within domestic ECL studies. This review provides starting material for the design of bio-inspired artificial systems, based on hardware elements for the analysis of verbal information and implementation of effective man–machine interfaces.
