Overview of Nanofibres as Ideal Drug Delivery Systems for Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Applications

摘要

Owing to their high drug loading capacity, high surface area to volume ratio and small size electrospun nanofibres have garnered significant interest in the delivery of drugs. Electrospinning techniques including mix or blend, coaxial, emulsion and melt electrospinning techniques have been utilized to create electrospun nanofibres for use in biomedical and other applications. It is a quick and flexible method for creating nanofibers from polymers. The drug loading method and interactions between polymers, drugs and the type of polymer erosion, and swelling or degradation all play a role in the drug delivery mechanism. Electrospun nanofibres have been loaded with a wide variety of medications including antibiotics, anticancer medicines, DNA, RNA, growth factors, and living cells. An outline of electrospinning methods and their use in the delivery of drug applications is provided in this review article.
