Potential of Metal Smelted from NdFeB Spent Permanent Magnet Recycling Towards Substrate for Additive Manufacturing: An Experimental Investigation

In this work, iron recovered from smelting of NdFeB spent permanent magnet scraps were modified as substrate samples through suction casting method. The wire arc additive manufacturing is used for deposition of SS410 wire on these prepared substrate samples. The experimental evidences about the structural morphology and mechanical properties of the samples fabricated are studied and the correlation is reported. The observations reported in this study for fabrication of SS410-based weldment through wire arc directed energy deposition on the cast base plate obtained from smelting of NdFeB magnets. The lowest microhardness of 383.2 HV is achieved for deposit compared to microhardness value of 750.9 HV corresponding to substrate. The lath martensitic phase on the deposit side and Fe-Fe3C phase on the substrate side is confirmed through field emission scanning electron phases. Such exploration of applying recycled metal being directly in the domain of additive manufacturing is novel.
