Interface Delamination and Damage Analysis of Rubber Rollers Used in Divider Rolls of Steel Pickling Tank
摘要
High chemical and thermal resistant rubber rollers are used in pickling process line for removing oxide scales from hot strip steel before reduction in cold rolling. The service life of these expensive rubber rollers is short due to mechanical breakdown/corrosion/chemical damage. This study investigates a damaged rubber roller to understand the composition of the roller and reason behind the structural failure during steel pickling process in the pickling tank. FTIR, TGA, Raman, and EDS analyses reveal that the roller is a fluro rubber-based material with 25–30 wt.% carbon black filler. The presence of amorphous carbon black particles in fluro rubber provides weak interfacial interactions between carbon black and fluro polymer. SEM study shows weak interfacial interactions causes interfacial delamination and followed by damage/rupture of the rubber roller during service period. Therefore, incorporation of fillers inside such type of special rubber detriments the performance and service life of the materials.
