Study on snowfall characteristics in the hinterland of the Taklimakan desert and its effects on dust weather

Precipitation is a key source of water in arid regions and also influences regional climate. Despite being an important form of precipitation, snowfall in desert areas remains poorly studied. In order to enhance the understanding of snowfall in the Taklimakan Desert and its effects on dust weather, the characteristics of snowfall in hinterland of the Taklimakan Desert and its effects on the threshold velocities for wind-sand movement were analyzed based on the snowfall observation data from 2004 to 2023 and wind-sand movement from 2008 to 2018. The results showed that the average annual snowfall days and snowfall amount were 5.9 days and 1.2 mm, respectively, and the annual snowfall days showed a downward trend, while the variation trend of annual snowfall amount was not significant. Snowfall events only occurred in January, February, November, and December, but it could happen at any time of the day, with the highest frequency occurring between 10:00–11:00. In the study area, 98.8% of snowfall events lasted less than 6.0 h and the minimum duration was only 0.07 h. The proportions of snowfall for light snow, moderate snow, and heavy snow were 13.1, 47.3, and 39.6%, respectively. Snowfall could suppress the occurrence of dust event in November, December and January to March of the following year by increasing the threshold velocities for wind-sand movement.
