The impact of land use transition on ecosystem services in the Poyang Lake Basin

The Poyang Lake Basin serves as both a vital grain production region in China and an internationally significant wetland. The land use transition driven by human activities has profoundly influenced ecosystem services. Assessing the scientific ramifications of these impacts in the Poyang Lake Basin is crucial for maintaining regional ecological equilibrium and global biodiversity. This study takes the Poyang Lake Basin as a case to analyze the spatiotemporal distribution patterns of land use transition and essential ecosystem services in order to discover the impact of land use transition on ecosystem services from structural and functional perspectives. The results revealed that: (1) from 2000 to 2020, the information entropy of land use structure in the basin gradually increased, indicating a tendency towards disorder, especially in the central part of the basin. Human activity intensity displayed a continuous upward tendency, indicating a growth trend in land use functions within the basin, with a spatial pattern of “higher in the north and lower in the south”. (2) habitat quality declined from 0.8098 to 0.7873 while carbon storage decreased from to. Water yield and soil conservation showed inverted U-shaped patterns, peaking in 2010 (2.44 × 1011 m3 and 3.54 × 108 metric tons respectively) before declining. Food supply increased consistently (2.20 to 2.54 × 108 kg). Spatially, most services displayed “low in center, high in periphery” distributions, with water yield showing strong north–south differences. Food production concentrated around Poyang Lake, contrasting with other services’ patterns.(3) the interplay between land use structure and function and ecosystem services in the Poyang Lake Basin was interactive and exhibited spatial heterogeneity. They are significantly negatively correlated with habitat quality, soil conservation, and carbon storage, positively correlated with food supply, and weakly correlated with water yield. The results of this study will provide scientific references for the sustainable utilization of land resources and ecological governance in the Poyang Lake Basin.
