A Rare Osteoma of the Articular Eminence Managed via the Inviscision Approach: A Case Report and Review of the Literature
摘要
Osteomas are benign bone tumors characterized by slow but continuous formation of compact and cancellous bone. They most commonly affect the craniofacial skeleton, particularly the mandible, whereas involvement of the articular eminence is extremely rare.
Case PresentationWe present the case of a 37-year-old female with complaints of preauricular pain and mandibular deviation to the left side on opening. Clinical examination revealed restricted mouth opening and a palpable bony mass in the left preauricular region. Panoramic radiograph and CT imaging demonstrated a well-defined pedunculated radiopaque lesion arising from the articular eminence of the left temporomandibular joint (TMJ) region measuring approximately 15 × 14 mm. The lesion was excised via the Inviscision approach, providing satisfactory surgical access and aesthetic outcome. Histopathological evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of osteoma. The postoperative course was uneventful, and the patient demonstrated complete functional recovery at 1-year follow-up.
ConclusionOsteomas of the articular eminence are exceedingly rare and can mimic temporomandibular joint disorders. Accurate imaging and complete surgical excision are essential for diagnosis and functional rehabilitation. The Inviscision approach offers safe and cosmetically favorable access for such lesions.
