Comparative Morphometric Analysis of Dry Human Mandibles and Resected Mandible Specimens in Patients with Oral Cavity Cancers: A Pilot Study
摘要
Understanding differences in mandibular morphometry is critical for enhanced surgical planning and optimizing outcomes in oncological settings. The objective of our study was to compare mandibular morphometry of dry human mandibles and resected mandible specimens obtained from patients with oral cancers.
MethodsThis cross-sectional study measured and compared the osteometric parameters of the mandibular ramus and muscle attachment areas in 60 dry and 40 resected mandibles. Data was analysed by continuous and dichotomous methods.
ResultsAs a continuous measure, significant differences were noted in all the condyle and coronoid related parameters, ramus width and ramus-notch height. Coronoid thickness (Odds Ratio [OR]: 20.31 [95% CI: 4.49–91.88]) showed significant variation between both groups when measured as dichotomous measure. Gender- related differences were limited to specific parameters like the ramus-coronoid height and mediolateral condylar head dimensions. Histological evidence of bone remodeling was noted.
ConclusionBone remodelling occurs in tobacco chewers, particularly in the coronoid process. Histological changes strengthen the morphological-histological linkage of remodeling. However, larger studies are needed to validate these findings.
