Can Morel-Lavallée Lesion Exist on Face?
摘要
Facial swelling is commonly seen following maxillofacial trauma and can exist due to soft tissue lacerations, underlying displaced fractures, infection, haemorrhage, or pre-existing deformity. Morel-Lavallée lesion (MLL) has not been mentioned as a differential diagnosis for any post traumatic swelling on the face. Owing to the rich vascularity of maxillofacial region, the robust interface between the connective tissue and SMAS (Superficial Musculo Aponeurotic System) and the absence of deep fascia on face, MLL lesions usually do not occur on face. However, the relative mobility of soft tissue in the areas where deep fascia is present, i.e., parotidomasseteric fascia, Tenon’s fascia, buccopharyngeal fascia, temporalis fascia, and pterygoid fascia, makes these areas relatively favourable for MLL. A 25-year-old female with post-traumatic MLL is reported, which was managed conservatively. Thorough literature search supports this as a second evidence of post traumatic swelling due to MLL on face.
