摘要

Introduction

One of the most common conditions leading to an underdeveloped TMJ is ankylosis among acquired etiological factors. With so many surgical options available, a young surgeon is in a dilemma as to which modality would give the best results. This review tries to analyse all options with their advantages and disadvantages.

Objectives

Contemporary literature was used to analyse the different surgical options in vogue and compare the merits and demerits of these options.

Conclusions

While autogenous grafts like costochondral grafts(CCG) and sternoclavicular joint(SCJ) are popular options for reconstruction of the joint, the disadvantages and morbidity of the donor site along with unpredictable growth or no growth has led to less than satisfactory results. The introduction of alloplastic total joint reconstruction with better technology and metallurgy hold out hope for a more predictive and functionally and aesthetically acceptable results in future.
