Effect of Whey Protein on Masticatory Muscles Post Open Reduction and Internal Fixation in Patients of Mandibular Fracture: An EMG Based Study

Mandibular fractures significantly affect masticatory function, requiring effective rehabilitation strategies This prospective study explored the role of whey protein supplementation in the recovery and rehabilitation of patients with unilateral mandibular fractures treated via open reduction.
Methodology40 patients were divided into two groups: one receiving whey protein supplementation and the other serving as a control. Recovery was assessed by evaluating electromyographic (EMG) activity of the superficial masseter and anterior temporalis muscles at various postoperative intervals.
ResultsResults indicated improved muscle activity and recovery in the supplemented group, suggesting a potential benefit of dietary interventions in enhancing rehabilitation outcomes.
ConclusionWhey protein supplementation improves masticatory muscle function during postoperative recovery in mandibular fracture patients. These findings highlight the potential of dietary interventions in enhancing rehabilitation, though further studies with larger cohorts are needed to confirm these results.
