MRI Safety of Magnetic Overdentures and Implants: a Review of Current Evidence and Recommendations

Implant-supported prosthetic rehabilitation has become the treatment of choice for edentulous patients, offering improved function, comfort, and quality of life. Among the available options, overdentures supported by endosseous implants stand out for their stability and ease of maintenance. These prostheses can be customized to meet the patient’s anatomical and financial conditions, allowing for individualized treatment planning.
PurposeMagnetic overdentures provide functional and hygienic benefits for edentulous patients; however, their safety in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) environments remains a clinical concern due to the presence of ferromagnetic components. This review aimed to evaluate the interactions between implant-supported magnetic overdentures and MRI settings.
MethodsA non-systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, focusing on experimental, clinical, and review studies
ResultsFindings indicate that the risk of component displacement and thermal injury is minimal, with deflection angles and temperature increases remaining well below critical thresholds. However, ferromagnetic components may cause significant image artifacts, potentially impairing diagnostic accuracy. Fixed and hybrid prostheses made of titanium or zirconia are generally safe and need not be removed. In contrast, removable magnetic overdentures, particularly those with unknown alloy compositions, should be extracted prior to MRI
ConclusionAlthough the available evidence supports clinical safety, it is limited by methodological heterogeneity and small sample sizes. Further in vivo studies and standardization of MRI compatibility testing are recommended.
