Introduction <p>The presence of a preferred chewing side (PCS) prevails in about 45–97% of the population. Studies addressing the effect of presence of the PCS on bite force (BF), muscular activity, and the development of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) had variant and contradicting conclusions. The aim of the current study was to evaluate this effect (if any).</p> Methods <p>Design: The current study was a cross-sectional study.</p> <p>Setting: Outpatient department.</p> <p>Subject: The current study was conducted on 967 participants with good general and oral conditions who have a full permanent dentition that is free of substantial anomalies.</p> <p>Main outcome measures: The PCS was determined subjectively and objectively. The biting force and the surface electromyography (EMG) of the masseter muscles were measured. All participants were interviewed and examined for the presence of TMD.</p> Results <p>About 67.74% of the participants had a PCS. The BF and the value of the EMG were stronger on the PCS, and there was a linear relationship in between. There was an association between having a PCS and the development of TMD.</p> Conclusion <p>The presence of a PCS affected the bite force and was associated with TMD, which may develop due to the insufficient stabilization against overextension.</p>

Introduction

The presence of a preferred chewing side (PCS) prevails in about 45–97% of the population.
