Development and Characterization of Biocompatible Absorbable Monofilament Suture Coated with Linezolid

Coatings on sutures have become increasingly popular in medical practice, particularly for preventing postoperative wound infections. Linezolid, an antibiotic from the oxazolidinone class with a broad spectrum of activity, was investigated in this in vitro study for its mechanical and antimicrobial properties when used on absorbable suture material.
Materials and MethodsA 1:1 solution of 1% gelatin and 1% hyaluronic acid was prepared. Then, 10 ml of this polymer solution was combined with 0.1 mg of linezolid powder and stirred at 4 °C until the mixture was homogeneous. This solution was applied as a coating on Ethicon Monocryl™ Suture USP 4-0 and evaluated for surface morphology, tensile strength, drug degradation, release profile, and antibacterial activity.
ResultsThe linezolid coating did not impact the tensile strength of the suture. Drug degradation from the coated suture material was relatively slow, with approximately 50% of the drug remaining after 7 days, and the drug release rate was stable. Additionally, the linezolid-coated sutures exhibited a significantly larger zone of inhibition against S. aureus compared to uncoated sutures.
ConclusionLinezolid-coated absorbable suture material displayed good tensile strength and antibacterial activity against S. aureus. This study has paved the way for development of new antimicrobial sutures.
