Those 50&#xa0;years and above and those who required combined surgery were excluded.</p> Interventions <p>Blood samples were collected preoperatively, and postoperatively (immediate, 24-h, 72-h, and 120-h periods) and analyzed using automated blood cell counter (Sysmex KX-21).</p> Main Outcome Measures <p>Data were analyzed with SPSS version 20.0. A <i>P</i>-value of &lt; 0.5 was considered significant. The difference between means of measurement was analyzed using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test while the possible effect of confounding factors was also tested using multiple linear regression techniques.</p> Results <p>72 participants, with a mean age of 15.2 ± 1.7&#xa0;years, were studied. Blood loss of up to 50&#xa0;ml in the young patients evoked a significant increase in the WBC/neutrophil counts. Surgeries lasting over 60&#xa0;min also demonstrated considerable effects. Sex showed no statistical difference. However, age showed statistical significance in the total WBC and neutrophil counts but not in the lymphocytes.</p> Conclusions <p>Age, blood loss, and operating time were important causes of changes in WBC count, except sex. However, controlling for these variables, we found age to be a significant predictor of the observed changes in the WBC count.</p>
