Introduction <p>Orthognathic surgery is the most acceptable means&#xa0;for the correction of dentofacial deformities in terms of its outcome and safety. Conventional way of orthognathic surgery&#xa0;constitutes longer operative hours, intraoperative blood loss, and prolonged&#xa0;post-op stay. The last decade&#xa0;has seen a significant change in transforming the conventional standards&#xa0;to outpatient settings&#xa0;through&#xa0;improved surgical techniques. The present pilot study aims at a similar goal with the use of a tumescent solution,&#xa0;for the patients undergoing LeFort 1 osteotomies.</p> Methodology <p>Five patients were selected and enrolled in the study where the tumescent solution was injected 10&#xa0;min prior to the surgical incision intraoperatively.&#xa0;Parameters assessed in the present study include intraoperative blood loss, postoperative stay, and postoperative pain. Quantitative mean values obtained were compared to the values&#xa0;documented in the&#xa0;literature,&#xa0;retrospective data.</p> Results <p>A significant reduction of values&#xa0;was&#xa0;noticed in the&#xa0;selected parameters on the comparison.&#xa0;The post-op stay recorded in the present study&#xa0;is&#xa0;1.2&#xa0;days when compared to the retrospective value of 1.2–8.5&#xa0;days.&#xa0;The mean intraoperative blood loss in this study was 264&#xa0;ml, significantly lower than the previously reported mean of 436.11&#xa0;ml, with a standard deviation of 207.89&#xa0;ml.</p> Conclusion <p>Hence, this study positively concludes the novel&#xa0;application of tumescent solution for improving&#xa0;orthognathic surgeries, in terms of intraoperative blood loss, postoperative stay, and postoperative morbidity.</p>

Introduction

Orthognathic surgery is the most acceptable means for the correction of dentofacial deformities in terms of its outcome and safety. Conventional way of orthognathic surgery constitutes longer operative hours, intraoperative blood loss, and prolonged post-op stay. The last decade has seen a significant change in transforming the conventional standards to outpatient settings through improved surgical techniques. The present pilot study aims at a similar goal with the use of a tumescent solution, for the patients undergoing LeFort 1 osteotomies.

Methodology

Five patients were selected and enrolled in the study where the tumescent solution was injected 10 min prior to the surgical incision intraoperatively. Parameters assessed in the present study include intraoperative blood loss, postoperative stay, and postoperative pain. Quantitative mean values obtained were compared to the values documented in the literature, retrospective data.

Results

A significant reduction of values was noticed in the selected parameters on the comparison. The post-op stay recorded in the present study is 1.2 days when compared to the retrospective value of 1.2–8.5 days. The mean intraoperative blood loss in this study was 264 ml, significantly lower than the previously reported mean of 436.11 ml, with a standard deviation of 207.89 ml.

Conclusion

Hence, this study positively concludes the novel application of tumescent solution for improving orthognathic surgeries, in terms of intraoperative blood loss, postoperative stay, and postoperative morbidity.
