Objectives <p>Maxillofacial fractures are common in trauma units globally, often requiring Maxillo-Mandibular Fixation (MMF) for several weeks. While MMF aids in bone healing, it restricts mandibular movements, impacting functions like eating and speaking, potentially leading to reduced nutritional intake and compromised health. Our study aims to assess the impact of nutritional intervention on the physical health of patients during MMF for jaw fractures by monitoring changes in weight and midarm circumference at various treatment intervals.</p> Method <p>144 patients with jaw fractures reported to the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Department of Govt. Dental College, Calicut who require maxillomandibular fixation were included irrespective of the etiology and assigned into two groups based on randomization-nutrition intervention group [GROUP 1] and nutrition nonintervention group [GROUP 2]. Anthropometric parameters such as body weight, midarm circumference were measured.</p> Results <p>Group 1 patients (Intervention group) had significantly reduced weight loss compared to group 2 (nonintervention group) at fourth week interval. MAC remained almost stable in group 1 and had a significant reduction in group 2.</p> Conclusion <p>Individually assessed and planned nutrition intervention may effectively help patients to maintain their weight and nutritional status during the MMF period, thus providing the patient with an improved quality of life.</p>

Method
