Sculpting the Unseen: Innovations in Orbital Implants and Prosthetics

摘要

Purpose

One of the perennial challenges confronting surgeons is the enucleation surgery, in conjunction with the repair of the surgical site and the installation of ocular prostheses. This surgical procedure has undergone many modifications since the inception of anesthesia techniques until it evolved into the contemporary method; these transformations are also conspicuous in ocular implants, and we have progressed from rudimentary initial implants composed of metals and glass to present-day polymeric implants. Prostheses have evolved from their primitive form in the past into prostheses bearing a striking resemblance to human tissue and even into a digital format. This advancement is scrutinized in this study.

Material and Method

This review was performed based on a search of the PubMed, Scopus, and Embase databases or relevant published papers regarding Orbital implants and prostheses on December 20th, 2023. No time restriction was proposed.

Results

107 articles were screened. Using implants and prostheses goes back to ancient Egypt; however, the shape and material used for making them have evolved dramatically. The congenital or traumatic loss or damage to organs, such as the eyes, causes severe problems for the patient, both physically and mentally. Nevertheless, efforts are continuing to develop orbital implants and prostheses that will overcome the shortcomings identified in this area.

Conclusion

The field of enucleation surgery has undergone substantial development since its inception, with ongoing improvements made to surgical procedures, anesthetic methods, and the use of intelligent instruments. This trend is also evident in surgical implants and prosthetic devices, which we have investigated in this study.
