Performance diagnostics in youth football are essential for the identification and promotion of talented players. While most diagnostic approaches focus on male players, there is a lack of scientifically validated and practice-oriented tools for female youth players. Especially missing are process-oriented diagnostics that assess football-specific competencies in realistic game situations.
MethodsSCoRE (Soccer Competencies in Realistic Environments) is a video-based observation tool designed to evaluate football-specific competencies of female players aged 10–16 (N = 920) through small-sided games (4v4). It covers seven dimensions: off-ball and on-ball game awareness, creativity, passing, ball control, offensive 1v1, and defensive 1v1. Observers rate players on a six-point scale. Psychometric properties were examined through internal consistency (Cronbach’s α), test–retest reliability (Pearson correlations), confirmatory factor analysis, and correlations with external validation criteria such as cognitive processing speed, agility, and VO2max.
ResultsSCoRE demonstrated strong internal consistency (α = 0.88), satisfactory test–retest reliability (r = 0.24–0.53, p < 0.05), and good model fit in the confirmatory factor analysis (RMSEA = 0.074, SRMR = 0.030). Significant correlations with cognitive (e.g., creativity r = 0.39, p < 0.001), motor (e.g., passing r = 0.45, p < 0.001), and physiological indicators (e.g., VO2max r = 0.52, p < 0.001) support the criteria validity of the tool.
ConclusionThe results confirm the psychometric soundness of SCoRE and support its use as a diagnostic instrument for football-specific competencies in female youth players. Compared to existing product-oriented tools, SCoRE provides a realistic, reliable, and practice-oriented approach. The discussion reflects on the findings in the context of current talent diagnostics literature and outlines practical and developmental implications for future applications.
