Improve Low Ambient Temperature Composting Process, Phosphorus Bioactivation and Mature Compost Quality by Cold-adapted Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria

Five composting experiments of the spent mushroom substrate (SMS) were carried out to evaluate the effect of cold-adapted phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) on the composting process and biological activation of phosphates at low ambient temperature and develop a more efficient disposal technology: no PSB in CK, mesophilic PSB was inoculated in T1, cold-adapted PSB wf10 was inoculated in T2, cold-adapted PSB wf12 was inoculated in T3, and both wf10 and wf12 were inoculated in T4. The best results were achieved in T4. Inoculation of wf10 and wf12 advanced the rapid heating stage of compost by 6 days, and extended the duration of the thermophilic stage by 3 days, increased the maximum temperature by 5 ℃, and accelerated the evolution of pH, moisture, EC, TOC, TN and C/N. The bio-activation of phosphates was enhanced, resulting in an increase of available phosphorus content by 67.95%±0.05%. The content of TN, TP, total humic acids and free humic acids in mature compost increased, indicating an improvement in fertility. This study elucidates the role of cold-adapted PSB during composting, and provides an effective solution to improve the low ambient temperature composting process, enhance the bio-activation of phosphates, and improve the quality of mature compost.
