A New Modified Media for the Production of Biofertilizers by Using Corncob Extract as a Nutrient Source

Corncobs, a major waste of corn production, are often underutilized or burned, contributing to environmental pollution. Therefore, this study explores the potential of corncob to use as a nutrient source for biofertilizer production. The corncob extract is obtained from continuous multiphase-multistage bioreactor (CMMB) system by biodegradation process and used as an alternative nutrient source for biofertilizer production. Initially, the nutritional analysis of corncob extract was conducted and results revealed that high content of total soluble sugars (7.25%), nitrogen (0.80%), phosphorus (0.63%), potassium (0.43%) and essential trace minerals (Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu), making it a promising nutrient source for microbial growth. The extract was further tested by replacing existing carbon sources in Waksman No.77, Pikovskays and GYCa media with different concentration (1%, 2%, and 3%) of corncob extract for production of nitrogen-fixing, phosphate and potassium solubilizing bacterial biofertilizer respectively. Highest population was recorded in media amended with the 2% and 3% corncob extract concentrations and it was on par with the existing and standard check (nutrient broth). Although both 2% and 3% concentrations were effective, the 2% corncob extract demonstrated equivalent performance while offering optimal nutrient balance. Therefore, the present study demonstrates that corncob extract serves as a viable alternative nutrient source for biofertilizer production.
