A Sustainable Approach to the Valorization of Date By-Products: Bioactive Potential of Pit Oils Extracted from Two Algerian Date Varieties

This research aimed to extract oil from two Algerian date cultivars, Takerboucht and Hmira, and evaluate their bioactive components for their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties.
MethodOil extraction from date pits was conducted using a cold mechanical extraction method. The oil’s chemical composition was characterized using GC, GC/MS, and 13C NMR. The physicochemical parameters and the total phenolic, chlorophylls, and carotenoids were quantified. In vitro assays were performed to assess the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial activities of the oils.
ResultsQuality assessments revealed that both oils exhibited high thermal and oxidative stability, making them safe for consumption. The average acid value was 1.68 mg KOH/g, while the peroxide value ranged from 0.20 to 0.24 meq O2/kg. The iodine value of the oils ranged from 40.64 to 43.18 g iodine/100 g, and K270 and K232 values were below the required limits. Fatty acid and triacylglycerol analyses showed oleic acid (45.3–47.3%), lauric acid (16.9–19.4%), palmitic acid (10.8–12.0%), and linoleic acid (7.9–8.5%) as the dominant fatty acids. The oils demonstrated strong antioxidant capacities in DPPH and ABTS assays, with IC50 values ranging from 2.12 ± 0.003 to 5.82 ± 0.03 µg/mL and 31.55 ± 0.01 to 135.21 ± 0.05 µg/mL, respectively. Phenolic content ranged from 611 ± 0.03 to 736 ± 0.02 µg GAE/mg. Furthermore, the oils from Takerboucht and Hmira pits exhibited significant anti-inflammatory potential, reducing inflammation by 78.34% and 57.66%, respectively, at a concentration of 24.2 µg/mL.
ConclusionThe production of date pit oil represents a promising opportunity for generating additional income while supporting the recycling of byproducts from date processing.
