<p>The scientific application of treated sewage sludge (SS) in land application provided that it has undergone safe and effective stabilization processes and complies with pollutant standards represents a viable and advantageous approach to resource utilization. To comprehensively grasp the advancements, pinpoint research focal points, and delineate future directions in the field of land application of SS, this study undertook a quantitative review and visual analysis of relevant research conducted between 1974 and 2023. This analysis utilized literature data extracted from the Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC) database and employed bibliometric tools, including Bibliometrix, VOSviewer, and Citespace. The results indicated a total of 3849 publications related to this field revealing a generally increasing trend in the number of publications over the years. Additionally, China and the USA emerged as the leading countries in publication output. Notable journals that frequently publish in this field include the <i>Science of the Total Environment</i>, the <i>Journal of Environmental Quality</i>, and <i>Waste Management</i>. Based on keyword co-occurrence and burst analysis, composting and anaerobic digestion were identified as the primary pretreatment techniques for the land application of SS. The influence of heavy metals (HMs) and emerging contaminants (ECs) present in SS on soil physicochemical properties, microbial diversity, and plant health has increasingly become a central focus of environmental research. Future research should prioritize the development of safe treatment technologies for ECs in SS, investigate their impacts on groundwater and aerosols, and explore their potential applications in the ecological restoration of degraded environments.</p>
