Formulation of Topical Ointment Using Seaweed Extracts of Ulva Lactuca and Codium Tomentosum and their Physicochemical, Antioxidant, Antiinflammatory, Antibacterial and Wound Healing Properties

Polysaccharides which are extracted from marine macroalgal biomass were found promising and greatly contributing to the future of a macroalgae based bioeconomy. In the present research work, two macroalgal seaweed species, Ulva lactuca and Codium tomentosum were investigated for the formulation of ointments. The extracts of these macroalgae were formulated into ointments, and thus were further tested for their physicochemical properties such as spreadability, loss of drying, and extrudability showed satisfactory results. Formulated ointments were also evaluated for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and wound healing activities. The antioxidant activity through DPPH free radical-scavenging assay was studied and comprehensive result was achieved in terms of effective concentration which scavenges 50% radical (IC50). The formulated macroalgae ointment was also screened for its antibacterial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and exhibited the zone of inhibition for all microorganisms tested. In vitro anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated using albumin denaturation assay, proteinase inhibitory activity, and heat-induced hemolysis. The ointments have shown good inhibition rate and confirmed as potential anti-inflammatory agent. Furthermore, a wound healing assay was also carried out in Vero cell lines where wound closure was found to be 50% for Ulva lactuca and 75% for Codium tomentosum derived ointments. Thus, the formulated macroalgae ointment can serve as a better medicine in various therapeutic applications.
