Investigate the Effects of Waste Valorization of Salicornia Persica Straw an Alternative Feed for shall Male Sheep

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of waste valorization of Salicornia straw an alternative feed for shall male sheep.
MethodsThe experiment was carried out in the sheep and goat research station of Iran animal science research institute in the spring of 2018 and for 21 days. A total eight male sheep with fistula were selected and divided into four groups. The experimental diets included a control and three diets containing 7%, 14% and 21% salicornia. Daily feed consumption and digestibility of nutrients were checked by recording the consumed feed and collecting feces. In the final week of the experiment, rumen samples were analyzed to determine pH, ammonia nitrogen, and volatile fatty acids.
ResultsThe results showed that the consumption of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crud protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and acid detergent fiber (ADF) was not affected by the experimental treatments, but the consumption of ether extract and ash was higher in diets containing Salicornia (P < 0.05). Water consumption increased linearly with increasing Salicornia straw in the diet (P < 0.05). Nutrient digestibility, except for ether extract (P < 0.05), was not affected by the experimental treatments. There was no significant difference between experimental treatments in terms of nitrogen excretion (urine and feces) and nitrogen retention. Three hours after feeding, rumen ammonia nitrogen in sheep-fed diets containing Salicornia increased non-linearly compared to the control group (p < 0.05). Increasing the levels of Salicornia straw in the diet led to a decrease in rumen propionate concentration (P < 0.05), while the concentrations of acetate, butyrate, isobutyrate, valeric, and isovaleric were not affected by the experimental diets.
ConclusionOverall, the use of Salicornia straw did not negatively impact feed consumption, digestibility, or fermentation parameters, making it a recommended option for animal feeding.
