Semi-Continuous Microwave-Assisted Oil Extraction and Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Butia Odorata Seeds: Efficient Recovery of Oil and Fermentable Sugars in a Sequential Method

As global demand for vegetable oil and its derived biomass residues rises, modern less toxic and more effective oil extraction techniques are needed. Butia odorata seeds were submitted to a semi-continuous microwave-assisted ethanol extraction (SMAE) and its solid residue was sequentially sent to enzymatic hydrolysis (EH) aiming to obtain fermentable sugars. The content of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin was determined. The process has been evaluated for oil extraction and sugars yield, and kinetic curves of the extraction and hydrolysis were performed. Antioxidant activity in Trolox equivalent has been evaluated to assess oil stability at 30, 60, and 90 days after extraction. SMAE best performance corresponded to a recovery of 81.30 ± 2.15% (60 °C-S/F 100) and 85.23 ± 2.09% (80 °C-S/F 100). The oil showed DPPH radical scavenging activity with an inhibition percentage (i%) of 37.37 ± 10.71 (at 30 days). For fermentable sugars, the best result of the enzymatic hydrolysis was 52.39 ± 0.40 g/100 g of defatted Butia odorata seeds (DBOS) (26 FPU − 1% CS) in 72 h, with cellobiose as the major product, reaching 48.84 g/100 g DBOS (26 FPU − 1% CS). SMAE followed by EH showed good performance compared to other techniques using pretreatments and severe experimental conditions.
