Valorization of Seaweed Aqueous Phase against Nosocomial Pathogens

The seaweed Gracilaria edulis, despite exhibiting numerous potential bioactive compounds, its over accumulation possesses economic and environmental burden. In the current study, we have valorised the aqueous phase (AQ) obtained during pyrolysis of seaweed as an effective anti-infective agent against the nosocomial pathogens. The GC-MS analysis showed furans and cyclopentenones as the major compounds that would be responsible for this action. It has showed excellent anti-biofilm property by eradicating the pre-formed biofilms at mono and mixed microbial conditions. The results showed about 60% eradication in case of mixed species biofilms. Further the molecular level downregulations were studied, which showed relative fold reduction in the pili, adhesion and ergosterol formation genes. SEM analysis on the stainless-steel coupons revealed drastic reduction in biofilms in case of AQ treated coupons. This gives us a potential way of valorisation the waste seaweed to an effective application.
