<p>The thrust of the paper is to chart out the salient developments in the field of social psychology since the publication of ‘Social Psychology as History’ by Gergen (1973), 50&#xa0;years ago. Two main directions that emerged to address the crisis in social psychology are addressed: Firstly, accommodations made within the positivist-empiricist tradition of mainstream psychology to incorporate the context in a more expanded manner, and secondly, the critical psychology tradition that sees self, society and knowledge as codependent. The epistemological, methodological and analytical stances of both are outlined. A future agenda for social psychology embedded in relational ontology, self-reflexivity and vision of social justice is discussed.</p>
