Digital Care: Practical Difficulties and Ethical Challenges
摘要
This study addresses the practical difficulties and ethical challenges of introducing digital technology into care, taking the reality of care as labour into consideration. Digital technology is expected to alleviate burdensome administrative tasks, streamline communication, and potentially automate routine monitoring in the field of care, thereby freeing human caregivers to dedicate more time to complex, relational aspects of care and reducing burnout. However, things do not necessarily go well as expected. This study reveals the practical difficulties including the tension between technological efficiency and the profoundly human, emotional nature of care, which cannot be easily replicated by machines, as well as ethical issues surrounding digital care, through literature research and interviews with staff working in a group home for people with disabilities in Sweden. Ethical concerns arise, for example, around the limitations of programming empathy and personalised care, and the potential exclusion of humans from care. The study calls for a comprehensive ethical framework that balances the benefits of digital tools with the need to preserve the moral, interpersonal and emotional aspects of care, particularly within diverse socio-economic contexts.
