Spatial Distribution and Key Environmental Factors of Benthic Polychaete Community in Korean Coast

This study was conducted to investigate the spatial distribution of benthic polychaete communities along the Korean coast and to examine the environmental factors influencing their distribution. Field surveys were conducted at 155 stations across the East Sea, the South Sea, and the West Sea in May 2018 and 2019, analyzing hydrological conditions of bottom water and sedimentary conditions. Cluster analysis and nMDS identified three distinct polychaete assemblages: the East Sea Group, characterized by deeper depths and high organic content; the South Sea Group, dominated by muddy sediments and exhibiting the lowest population density; and the West Sea Group, associated with sandy sediments and showing the highest density. Representative species with high dominance and contribution were identified in each groups: Magelona pacifica and Maldane cristata in the East Sea Group, Magelona japonica in the South Sea Group, and Ampharete finmarchica and Aricidea sp. in the West Sea Group. The hydrological factors primarily influenced community structure in the East Sea Group; both hydrological and sedimentary factors were influential in the South Sea Group, while sedimentary factors were predominant in the West Sea Group. This study showed that benthic polychaete communities along the coast of Korea were formed under the influence of different environmental factors unique to each sea, and these results could be used as important basic data for establishing coastal ecosystem management and conservation policies.
