Host plant mediated differences on biotic potential and nutritional indices of fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae)

The invasive fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith), showed resistance to various groups of insecticides, underscoring the urgent need for economically and ecologically sustainable management techniques. This issue is addressed by identifying FAW's preferred hosts. Therefore, this study primarily focused on the impact of different host plants (maize, soybean, cabbage, tomato, eggplant, Desmodium), and an artificial diet on various nutritional indices and biotic potential parameters. FAW larvae completed their shortest lifecycle on maize, while the longest duration was observed on Desmodium and brinjal hosts. The number of egg masses and total eggs laid by FAW females was peaked on the artificial diet. The nutritional indices on different host plants were varied according to FAW larval instars. The efficiency of conversion of ingested food (ECI) in the last instar larvae was highest on Desmodium, while the efficiency of conversion of digested food (ECD) peaked on cabbage and was lowest on the artificial diet. The highest approximate digestibility (AD) value was found for tomato and the lowest for soybean. Brinjal exhibited the highest relative growth rate (RGR), whereas maize had the lowest (0.15 ± 0.02 g/g body weight per day). Tomato had the highest consumption index (CI) value for last instar larvae, while Desmodium had the lowest value. Overall, maize, soybean, and artificial diets were identified as the most preferable hosts for S. frugiperda. However, due to the high nutritional indices of some instars on cabbage, brinjal, and tomato, these plants might become alternative hosts for S. frugiperda in the absence of the preferred host.
