Neem-based bioherbicide formulations found effective against broomrape parasitizing Brassica juncea L

Plant-based pesticides, especially insecticides, have been in practice for ages for the effective and eco-friendly control of agricultural pests. However, there is a dearth of information on the use of bioherbicides to control weeds, especially parasitic weeds in field crops. Selection of raw materials and their concentration and formulation are keys to developing a potent and effective bioherbicide for the selective control of weeds. We have developed suspension concentrate (SC), suspo emulsion (SE) and nano-emulsion (NE) formulations from the raw material of neem (Azadirachta indica L.), karanj (Pongamia pinnata L.) and cashewnut (Anacardium occidentale L.) either alone or in combination with chemical herbicides, and compared with the emulsion in water (EW) and emulsifiable concentrate (EC) formulations. These formulations were tested against Broomrape (Phelipanche aegyptiaca Pers.), a holo-root parasite weed of Indian mustard (Brassica juncea Czern & Coss), under replicated field trials for three years. The contemplative comparison showed that EW and SE formulations significantly controlled broomrape in Indian mustard. Neem oil (NO) 10% EW formulation applied at 1000 ml/ha recorded the highest weed control efficiency (WCE), ranging from 63–90% (≈76.5%) in different field trials. NO 10% EW also recorded a lower weed index (WI) (-13 to + 13%), and higher seed yield of Indian mustard. The SE formulation of ‘NO 18% EW + metsulfuron methyl 1% SC’, a complex bioherbicide, applied at 4.0 ml a.i./ha showed the highest WCE (79%), lowest WI (-5%) and the highest seed yield of Indian mustard. Thus, neem oil 10% EW and SE ‘neem oil 18% EW + metsulfuron methyl 1% SC’ formulations were found effective and may be explored commercially for the eco-friendly management of broomrape in India mustard.
