A comprehensive diagnosis and biology of stink bug, Halyomorpha picus (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), with notes on its management in arecanut plantations

The stink bug, Halyomorpha picus (Fabricius) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) is an important sucking pest that damages the economic parts of various crops and particularly associated with tender nut dropping in arecanut (Areca catechu L.) The nymphs and adult bug suck the sap from 45 to 90 days old tender nuts and responsible for significant yield losses. This study aimed to understand the feeding potential and biology of H. picus for implementation of suitable control measures. In this regard, surveys conducted from 2018 to 2021 in farmer's plantations and recorded the pest incidence ranging from 10.83% to 34.16%. DNA barcoding based on the mitochondrial COI gene confirmed the species' identity and morphological features as H. picus. In addition, species diagnosis, bionomics and morphology of various life stages of the pest were illustrated, along with the ultra-structural characterization of the adult pentatomid bug. The total life cycle duration was ranged from 59 – 92 days, with a mean fecundity of 87.11 ± 10.88 eggs/female. Furthermore, the efficacy of various insecticides revealed that arecanut palms treated with thiamethoxam 25 WG (0.4 g litre−1) and clothianidin 50 WDG (0.24 g litre−1) could effectively suppress the pest population and reduced the percent nut drop to 1.00 and 1.89% at 45 days after spraying (DAS), respectively. Overall, the findings of this study serve as reference guide for diagnosis and management of H. picus in arecanut plantations.
