Lethal and sublethal effects of insecticides on different life stages of Fulgoraecia melanoleuca (Fletcher), a key parasitoid of Pyrilla perpusilla (Walker) in sugarcane

Fulgoraecia melanoleuca (Fletcher) is a key nymphal and adult ectoparasitoid of Pyrilla perpusilla (Walker) in sugarcane. Seven insecticides, chlorpyrifos 20 EC, imidacloprid 17.8 SL, pymetrozine 50 WG, chlorantraniliprole 18.5 SC, flubendiamide 480 SC, flonicamid 50 WG, fipronil 5 SC, and four biopesticides Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki 0.5 WP, Metarhizium anisopliae 1.0 WP, Beauveria bassiana 1.0 WP, and Neem (azadirachtin 1500 and 50,000 ppm) were assessed at recommended field application rates in order to assess the lethal and sublethal effects against different life stages (egg, larva, cocoon, and adult) of F. melanoleuca. The insecticides and biopesticides were classified into different toxicity categories according to criteria given by the International Organization for Biological Control (IOBC). Among the selected insecticides, chlorpyrifos, imidacloprid and fipronil were harmful to adult (male and female) parasitoids, whereas pymetrozine, chlorantraniliprole, flubendiamide and flonicamid were slightly harmful. In an acute toxicity trial with egg stage of the parasitoid, chlorpyrifos, imidacloprid, and fipronil were found to be slightly harmful. Hatched larvae from treated eggs did not show sublethal effects with respect to larval survival, larval period, pupal survival, pupal period, adult emergence, or proportion of females in all insecticides tested. When larvae were treated with different insecticides, chlorpyrifos and fipronil were harmful, whereas imidacloprid, pymetrozine, chlorantraniliprole, flubendiamide and flonicamid were moderately harmful. After treatments with imidacloprid, pymetrozine, chlorantraniliprole, flubendiamide and flonicamid, the pupal period of the surviving population was prolonged and adult emergence decreased significantly. Chlorpyrifos was moderately harmful to F. melanoleuca cocoons, whereas imidacloprid and fipronil were slightly harmful. The longevity of the adults that emerged from treated cocoons treated with these insecticides was shorter. The outcome of the study will facilitate integrated pest management programs in cropping systems with abundant F. melanoleuca populations.
