<p><i>Eupterote orientalis</i> (Fabricius) is one of the oldest described species in the family Eupterotidae (Lepidoptera: Bombycoidea) from the Indian Subcontinent, and its taxonomic status remained obscure and unclear until recently. It is recorded as a sporadic pest of banana in parts of South India (Tamil Nadu and Kerala) for the first time. Notes on its diagnosis and biology on banana are provided along with first ever illustrations of the life stages. Molecular characterization of <i>E. orientalis</i> was done through COXI sequencing to facilitate its rapid identification. The later instar larvae were found to be heavily parasitized by <i>Enicospilus</i> sp. (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae) and an unidentified tachinid. Its pest status and similarity to other <i>Eupterote</i> species are briefly discussed.</p>
