Biological attributes and population growth parameters of five dominant syrphids against Brevicoryne brassicae infesting cabbage

For effective biological control, there is a necessity to understand the role of predator–prey dynamics by studying the developmental biology, population growth parameters and reproductive parameters like fertility table of a predator through various stages of their life cycle. Therefore, the present study was conducted to understand the developmental biology and population growth parameters of dominant aphidophagous syrphids against the cabbage aphid, Brevicoryne brassicae (L.). The developmental study of aphidophagous syrphids on B. brassicae showed that the highest development, pre-oviposition and oviposition period were recorded for Eupeodes pseudonitens followed by Eupeodes corollae, Ischiodon scutellaris, Sphaerophoria indiana and Episyrphus balteatus, respectively. Eupeodes pseudonitens had the highest fecundity (egg/female) (54.75), followed by E. corollae (53.09), E. balteatus (44.38), S. indiana (38.25), while the lowest fecundity was recorded for I. scutellaris (34.22). The age-specific fertility table parameters indicated that the maximum life expectancy (exj) was of larval stages of E. pseudonitens (32.45 to 27.25 days) when fed on B. brassicae followed by the E. corollae. The fxj graph of E. balteatus showed a higher fecundity rate when fed on B. brassicae, followed by E. pseudonitens, E. corollae, S. indiana and I. scutellarus. The age stage-specific reproductive value (vxj) also showed the maximum contribution of adult females to the future population. The highest reproductive rates (GRR and R0) were achieved when E. corollae (33.18; 29.20) were fed on B. brassicae. The intrinsic rate of increase (r) and finite rate of increase of E. corollae were the highest (r = 0.132; λ = 1.141) and were significantly at par with E. balteatus (r = 0.112; λ = 1.118). In our study, development rate, age-specific survival rate, fertility, life expectancy and growth parameters of all dominant aphidophagous syrphids on B. brassicae showed promising results in controlled conditions. This study will be helpful in determining field efficacy of these syrphid flies as this field efficacy needs to be studied before using them as biocontrol agents in integrated pest management programmes.
