Decoding the path to environmental, social, and governance integration in Indian businesses: a contextual and structural analysis of drivers
摘要
In response to the mounting imperative for sustainable business practices, this paper investigates the significant drivers that influence the successful implementation of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) norms in Indian organisations. Adopting the Total Interpretive Structural Modelling (TISM), this research develops a hierarchical framework model depicting the contextual and causal relationships between the identified ESG drivers. Matrice d’Impacts Croisés Multiplication Appliquée à un Classement (MICMAC analysis) is employed to assess and classify the drivers based on their driving powers and dependence. Through a systematic literature review followed by expert validation process, the study identified 11 key drivers from an initial pool of nineteen. Drivers namely, Global environmental crisis, Regulatory compliance, Cost saving & Efficiency and Risk management emerged as most influential drivers that drive implementation. Drivers, Employee wellbeing and Inclusion were found to be autonomous drivers and require exclusive attention. The development of TISM reveals critical direct and transitive relationships, offering insights to develop roadmap for successful ESG implementation. Practical Implications of this research includes a strategic framework for implementation managers and organisational stakeholders to prioritize ESG drivers based on their inter influence and interdependence. The findings support policymakers to streamline compliance efforts by concentrating on the key drivers of ESG adoption. Organisations shall use this developed framework model to effectively align HRM practices and stakeholder engagement strategies with ESG objectives. This novel study is the first of this kind while adopting an integrated approach that bridges the gap in the existing literature by providing a systemic understanding of driving elements of ESG implementation by analysing the hierarchical influence and contextual relationships that facilitates more informed and sustainable corporate strategies. The contribution of the present study lies in the sense it helps organizations in identifying all the important factors relevant while implementing and strategizing sustainability in their organizations.
