Comparative statistical analysis of yield, nutritional, and bioactive traits in Lentinula edodes (Shiitake) strains

Strain variability in Lentinula edodes (shiitake mushroom) limits reliable selection for cultivation and nutraceutical applications. Five strains were evaluated under standardized conditions using an integrative framework that combines ANOVA, PCA, Random Forest regression, Pearson correlation, and hierarchical clustering. Significant differences were detected in yield, nutritional traits, and bioactive metabolites. PCA separated strains into productivity- and bioactive-oriented groups, while Random Forest identified β-glucan content, cultivation cycle, and flavonoids as major predictors of yield. Clustering confirmed three performance groups: DMRO-356 as the most nutraceutical-rich strain, DMRO-388s as the most commercially efficient strain, DMRO-34 and DMRO-35 as moderate performers, and DMRO-623 as unsuitable for cultivation. The findings demonstrate the utility of an integrated multivariate framework for strain evaluation, providing a data-driven basis for both commercial production and functional food development.
