<p>In the present-day dynamic market scenario, selection and assessment of suppliers is treated as an important tactical decision in supply chain management enabling an organization to be more flexible, competing, responsive and sustainable for its long-term survival. Supplier selection can be thought about a multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) problem, and various MCDM tools along with other integrated methods have been deployed to solve those problems in different industrial/service sectors. This paper mainly aims to perform a systematic literature review to explain how an organization can enhance its supply chain performance through selection of appropriate suppliers using varying MCDM methods. The contents of 240 shortlisted articles available in the Scopus database during 2013–2022 are inspected with reference to year-wise, country-wise, institution-wise and journal-wise publications, type of industry, number of alternative suppliers, considered criteria, MCDM tool(s) tested and other analytical models integrated with MCDM techniques to focus on the current and emerging trends in the domain literature. Technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution and analytic hierarchy process are the most popular MCDM techniques employed mainly in manufacturing industries; the most common criteria are cost, quality and delivery time; and fuzzy set theory is maximally fused with MCDM methods to deal with uncertain supplier selection process. China and Vilnius Gediminas Technical University have surpassed the other countries and universities/institutions, respectively with respect to number of MCDM publications on supplier selection. ‘Sustainability’ has published maximum number of articles on the considered topic during the review period. Thus, this paper can be regarded as an important guide to assist the industrial managers in investigating the potentiality of different MCDM techniques and other integrated approaches leading to deployment of the most suited method and set of evaluation criteria while working out supplier selection problems in certain as well as uncertain environment. It would help in understanding the research gaps and contribute high value to the researchers providing future directions.</p>
